Amber Schilling planned to be a psychologist, but volunteering for a 24-hour crisis management hotline and advocating for sexual assault victims while in college showed her how helpless and vulnerable some people can be. She thought becoming a lawyer would enable her to provide greater support and position her to effect more significant, long-lasting change.

While attending South Texas College of Law, she served as a guardian ad litem for the Harris County 129th Civil District Court, researching medical records, advocating for a young child and attending court hearings. Her summer internships were spent working at a consumer rights litigation firm. She also clerked for the Harris County Attorney’s Office, where she researched city and county codes and property and tax laws relating to illegal gambling establishments.

Her work clerking and now as an associate at SBSB Eastham Law, where she focuses on the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act, Defense Base Act, and War Hazards Compensation Act, has revealed a passion she didn’t know she had. She likes the variety and complexity of the various claims and having the opportunity to step inside and intimately understand important events that are happening around the world. She has worked on cases involving incidents in Iraq, Kosovo and Afghanistan.

Her stellar research skills — she worked as a law research librarian while in law school — give her a significant advantage in many cases, as they require understanding and applying laws and decisions that have been made in circuit courts all over the country.
