Colten Chapman has learned that in his practice areas — defending claims arising under the Defense Base Act, the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act, the Jones Act and the War Hazards Compensation Act — the realities of the world impose themselves more than in most other attorneys’ cases. From war zones and countries or regions that are far less technologically advanced to the unique customs of different areas, even the currency rates — all can impact the preparation of a successful defense.

But that’s what he finds the most interesting. The legal system may work differently in other parts of the world, but Colten relishes the challenge of getting a doctor to a small village in Nepal to interview a claimant or navigating the customs of a country and culture far removed from the everyday life of a Houston, Texas, attorney.

Having clients put their trust in him, that he can overcome those obstacles and deliver a successful outcome for them, is what motivates him on each case.

Colten earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Houston School of Law, where he worked as an Articles Editor on the Houston Journal of International Law, as well as participated in Moot Court competitions. While completing his degree, he worked as a judicial clerk in Harris County and in-house for a multinational outsourcing conglomerate.
