Erik D. Garza is Managing Partner of SBSB Eastham’s Galveston office. His accomplished legal career has taken him from the courtroom to the boardroom- a veteran of a multitude of trials in both state and federal courts as well fourteen Board meetings in his capacity as General Counsel, his practice is focused primarily on admiralty & maritime, energy, insurance, and general counsel matters. He has represented vessel owners, charterers, managers, operators, P&I clubs, and marine insurers in all manner of marine casualty losses and contract disputes. His representative experience includes the handling of maritime collisions, allisions, cargo damage/loss, transportation and logistics disputes, charter party disputes, oil and other hazardous materials pollution, personal injuries (including Jones Act, 905(b), Longshore & Harborworkers Compensation Act, and third-party claims), repatriation efforts, stowaways, and matters involving the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act. He is also experienced in handling vessel arrests and attachments. Mr. Garza has represented clients in state, federal, and administrative courts, arbitration, mediation, and at formal hearings before the United States Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board.

Before joining the firm, he served as Vice President & General Counsel at ABS Group of Companies, Inc. and prior to that as Associate General Counsel for the international classification society American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) where he supported its Americas operations and was also responsible for the enterprise’s Risk & Insurance functions.

Mr. Garza is a current member of the Planning Board of the Houston Marine & Energy Insurance Conference, past Skipper of the Houston Mariners Club, and past President of the Southern District of Texas Chapter of the Federal Bar Association. He is a past Board Member of the Houston Mariners Club, Houston International Seafarers Center, and Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute.

Erik holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Science from Texas A&M University. After completing his undergraduate studies, he received his law degree from The Seton Hall University School of Law.
